What Kind of Coffee Is Best for Beginners? Simple Options to Try First

Welcome to the World of Coffee

Choosing your first coffee can feel like stepping into a whole new world—but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Many of us stay coffee beginners for years, unsure of where to start or how to branch out. Just the other day, one of my regular customers came in and ordered his usual: a coffee with 20 white sugars and extra cream. “I know, it’s diabetes in a cup,” he joked, “but I like my coffee sweet.”

I smiled and suggested, “Why not try our white mocha syrup instead of all the sugar? It’ll still be sweet but it might help you slowly cut back. It will be easier to enjoy black coffee by using other flavors.” He responded: “I didn’t know you could do that. Can I try that today!”

Starting small can make all the difference. Coffee is fun!! It does not take a lot to go from level 1 coffee for beginners to level 4 daily coffee drinker. In this guide, you’ll find simple, beginner-friendly coffee recommendations that will help you step confidently into the world of coffee—so let’s sip with purpose and intention.

1. Why Beginners Struggle to Choose Coffee

For some reason, coffee purists insist that everyone should love black coffee—but that’s simply not true. Many beginners struggle because they assume starting with black coffee is the only option. It’s not. Coffee is for everyone, not only coffee beginners. Period. You don’t have to enjoy bold, bitter brews right away. In fact, jumping straight into black coffee and trying to “fix” it with 20 sugars and cream can actually ruin your journey into truly appreciating coffee.

When I first started at Starbucks, I didn’t like black coffee at all. Let’s be honest—most people don’t. But unlike most coffee beginners, I was introduced to so many delicious, milky handcrafted drinks and incredible food pairings that it completely changed the way I experienced coffee. These drinks and pairings showed me how coffee could be approachable, fun, and surprisingly easy to enjoy.

So, if you’re a level 1 coffee beginner, don’t stress. Start simple, and I’ll guide you through the process—just like I did for myself in this post.
